Are you interested in becoming a chaplain?

Are you exploring a role as a voluntary workplace chaplain?  Supporting individuals in their daily working lives as they face life’s challenges and joys can be very rewarding.

NIM has a long history of chaplaincy work going back to the 1960’s and beginning with the coal industry and other traditional ‘heavy’ industries. Today we support chaplains in a diverse range of workplaces.

Chaplains are ‘sent’ by the church and represent their faith communities – so it is important they have proper oversight, training and support.

What kind of people are chaplains?

There are many different kinds of chaplains. Some are ordained, readers, lay preachers, pastoral assistants, lay people – all come with a background of lived work and faith experience. Most are volunteers.

Is this for me?

It’s important to think about several questions from the outset.  Where do you want to volunteer? What training will you need? How do you feel about working with people from a range of backgrounds, faiths and beliefs?

When it comes to training, some institutions offer degree level courses in chaplaincy, while others offer certificates. Alongside this NIM is developing a training programme which will offer a foundation to voluntary chaplaincy.
